Floorstanding lamp · 2025-26
As part of a paired project at UWE Bristol, we designed and developed a generative lamp using parametric modelling techniques in Rhino's Grasshopper environment. The concept was inspired by organic forms found in nature — particularly leaf vein structures — and was developed iteratively using AI image generation tools (Vizcom) to explore and refine the aesthetic direction before committing to a digital form. The final design takes the shape of a curved, flame-like leaf silhouette with an intricate internal lattice, intended as a luxury statement piece for high-end homes, hotels, spas, and offices.
The geometry was generated entirely through a custom Grasshopper script, combining multiple algorithmic approaches — including a Shortest Walk algorithm applied to a surface mesh to create the natural-looking vein pattern, Voronoi cell structures for the rear face, and the Parakeet plugin for additional organic patterning. After mirroring and piping the geometry into a printable 3D form, the lamp was prototyped in PETG plastic across multiple iterations, with the final design featuring a three-legged base that gives the piece a floating quality. The completed prototype was fitted with an LED strip, demonstrating how the lattice structure casts dramatic shadow patterns across surrounding surfaces, reinforcing the lamp's identity as both a functional light source and a sculptural object.
